The Vital Role of Art Walks in Our Community
Summary
Art Walks help bring neighborhoods to life by activating local businesses, encouraging people to explore new places, and creating access to local art (and to meet local artists!).
The Importance of Art Walks
Art Walks help bring neighborhoods to life by activating local businesses, encouraging people to explore new places, and creating access to local art (and to meet local artists!). Art Walks not only support artists, they increase foot traffic, and strengthen a neighborhood’s sense of connection and identity.
Access to Venues for Artists
Finding venues to show artwork can be difficult! Art Walks help create opportunities to exhibit in local businesses, whether through a one-night pop-up or a month-long display. This happens by working with volunteers at the Art Walk or directly with businesses! Art Walks will have access to a few small businesses that want art on their walls!
Each Art Walk has it’s own set of Rules
Because Art Walks are usually entirely volunteer run and every small business, neighborhood, and city are different – there aren’t any “universal rules” that apply to all art walks (except to go out and enjoy art!).
Some prefer if you work with Art Walk organizers directly, some venues want direct contact with artists, and some Art Walks create artist lists for venues to choose from. (For starters!)
How To Show Up as an Artist
- If you’re an artist that got their art in an Art Walk, show up and be present with people who want to talk to you about your art!
- Show up to support other artists! Instead of only going if your art is up, show up anyway – support your local businesses and your fellow artists! (this is what being a part of a community is all about!)
- Ask your neighborhood Art Walk organizers if there are any volunteer opportunities (sometimes they need all the help they can get!)
- Is there no Art Walk in your neighborhood? Was there one but it’s no longer active? Think about starting one! It takes passionate and dedicated people to make these things happen.
