How do you distinguish yourself from being a new versus an emerging artist? Or maybe you’re well on your way to being a mid-career or established artist already! It’s certainly a spectrum, but here’s a quick YES/NO quiz to help you identify which venues are better suited for you at this moment in your artist journey. Also, every artist's journey is very different - so please take this quiz with a grain of salt if you are on your own unique path!

Do you have any formal art training or education?(Required)
This could be an art degree, taking multiple classes or workshops, or self-study that equates to around 200+ hours of structured or self-developed art education. (This shows dedication of ongoing skill development)
Have you displayed your work in any public/professional setting at least three times?(Required)
Examples include: local gallery, juried art show, or group exhibition. (This suggests an artist is not entirely new to displaying work and all that goes into it.)
Have you ever sold a piece of your art before?(Required)
Even one sale counts, but maybe not to a family member, ha! (When you start to sell your work, this means you’re growing an audience.)
Have you created a distinct voice and recognizable style, theme, or focus in your work?(Required)
When you have a distinctive style, and you’re not mimicking someone else’s work (which is normal/common for newer artists!), you can expand your body of work into a larger series.
Do you have mentors, peers, or art enthusiasts in the art community who support, promote, or collaborate with you?(Required)
This indicates that you’ve dedicated significant time to nurturing relationships within a community you’re invested in.
Do you have a professional portfolio of your work, such as high-quality photos, artist statements, or a website?(Required)
Showcasing your work professionally is important for venues to take you seriously. (Note that you don’t have to be internet-famous! Many notable artists are not on social media at all - they just have a robust and professional portfolio to show galleries/venues.)
Do you have a regular practice of applying to open calls, grants, residencies, or competitions?(Required)
Doing so means you likely have a larger body of work, understand deadlines and professionalism, and are comfortable advocating for your art.
Have you ever had a solo exhibition in a gallery?(Required)
Solo shows in a gallery versus any other setting often mean you’ve developed a large or cohesive body of work, and are recognized for your style.
Have you received any art-related grants, fellowships, or awards?(Required)
External recognition shows your work stands out in competitive environments, and you’re familiar with the process of applying for awards and grants.
Have you taught a workshop, lecture, or class related to your art practice?(Required)
This can indicate you're seen as an expert or mentor by others.
Do other artists reference or cite your work as inspiration or influence?(Required)
This shows your voice and artistic style is recognizable and respected in your field.
Have you built a sustainable income stream from your art over the last few years (through sales of original work, prints, licensing, teaching, etc.)?(Required)
Art doesn’t have to be your only income, but some consistency suggests there is a longevity and sustainability to your art.
